After a long drawn out process questioning the Department of Defense's cybersecurity role, the Senate has unanimously confirmed National Security Agency director Keith Alexander as head of a new DoD command tasked with defending military networks from cyber attacks.

When it becomes fully operational in October 2010, the U.S. Cyber Command will be headquartered at Fort George G. Meade in Maryland alongside NSA, and will report through the U.S. Strategic Command. Cyber Command will absorb two of the organizations currently leading much of the military's cyber-defense capabilities -- the Joint Functional Component Command for Network Warfare and the Joint Task Force for Network Operations.

A new survey finds that more than 90% of private and public sector security experts say cyber attacks pose a serious threat.  The poll also found that 70 percent of government officials surveyed said private-sector networks were not secure enough, while 39 percent of private sector security officials surveyed believed government networks were not secure enough.
