The CSPAN Communicators show has started a four-part series on U.S. cybersecurity. In the first installment broadcast on August 6th, White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt discusses the Obama Administration's effort to reduce cyber threats and to protect the U.S. against cyber attacks. This includes the Administration's legislative proposal and plans to protect U.S. infrastructure such as the electric grid, transportation systems, and Wall Street, as well as U.S. military defenses and businesses from cyber attacks. Retired Gen. Michael Hayden, recently called the hazard of hacked hardware "the problem from hell"... as the the former CIA and NSA he should know since he was probably heading U.S. programs to do this to our adversaries.
The DoD has been worried about foreign adversaries tampering with its hardware for a while now. In 2005, a Defense Science Board report warned that foreign adversaries could slip back doors into chips destined for installation in important military gear. The hacked circuits, the report said, could be tweaked to malfunction early or provide a de facto kill switch to a weapon system. READ MORE...
